Let’s Change “Basic” To Classic

Let’s Change “Basic” To Classic

It’s finally Fall, and although I love the season, it means the dreaded stereotype shaming that comes with enjoying apple orchards or a pumpkin spice latte from time to time. Why is it that we have taken it upon ourselves to shame people for taking part in some of the best activities of Fall? Far too often I hear people put one another down for their enjoyment of Fall activities.

When is the last time you heard someone make fun of building a snowman in the winter or a sandcastle in the summer? No other season is ridiculed quite like Fall. Summer is cherished for its warm weather and break from school. Winter has many beloved holidays like Christmas and Hanukkah. And Spring signifies warmer weather and the hope (at least for those of us from the Midwest) that there is a light at the end of the snow filled tunnel.

So from the viewpoint of an arguably “basic white girl”, I ask you this. What is so wrong with liking pumpkin flavored beverages, apple orchards, haunted houses, hayrides, or any other Fall activity that may be deemed “basic”? One of my favorite parts about living in the Midwest is experiencing the four seasons and watching the world around me change from one season to the next. Ultimately, my opinion will not change based on your rude, and un-asked for comments, and I will continue to sip my pumpkin spiced latte while I watch the leaves change. That being said, I strongly encourage you to try some of these “basic” Fall activities for yourself before you judge them. There is a reason people flock to apple orchards and haunted houses in the Fall. After all, these activities were classic long before they got labeled basic. Here is my list of 10 classic Fall activities that everyone should try.

  1. Tailgating
  2. Apple Picking
  3. Pumpkin Carving
  4. Corn Mazes
  5. Haunted Houses
  6. Hot Apple Cider
  7. Hayrides
  8. Bonfires
  9. Trick or Treating
  10. Costume Parties
