How To Build A Car Survival Kit

At one time or another all of us have wished that we had something in our car. By building a car survival kit hopefully this won’t happen again. In this post I’ll tell you a list of things that I think everyone should keep in their car to make their life a whole lot easier. Keep in mind that this list is based off of myself, there may be additional items that you need or think would work better for you. The best way to make a car survival kit is to think about your daily life and what you find yourself needing the most when you’re in the car.

#1 Lip balm

I bring lip balm with me everywhere I go. There is one in my backpack, purse, nightstand, car, and I find them in my jackets sometimes too. I consider it a necessity. Nobody likes to have chapped lips, it’s uncomfortable. Luckily  it has an easy fix, carry your favorite brand of lip balm in your car.

#2 Tissues

I always have tissues in my car because you never know when you will need it. If you have allergies or a cold they are a lifesaver. Personally, I keep a full box of them, but you could keep a travel pack in your glove box if you want to save space.

#3 Gum

Gum is one of those things that is great to have wherever you are. Having it in your car makes it accessible no matter where you end up. So pick your favorite flavor and add it to your car survival kit!

#4 Hair ties

If you have longer hair you understand why hair ties are on this list. They can be used to keep your hair out of your face, but they can also be used like a rubber band. Whether you need to close a bag or keep your pens and pencils together, hair ties can solve your problem!

#5 First Aid Kit

You do not need a full blown first aid kit, but having some of the basics is a good idea. I would recommend having band aids, Neosporin, antibacterial wipes and pain medication. These should take care of any day to day small injury that you may have. You can pick and choose what you want in your first aid kit and what you think you will use the most.

#6  Blanket

I always have one or two blankets in my car. They can be used for picnics or outdoor events, and come in handy when it gets cold outside and you want something to wrap up in.

#7 Shovel

If you live in a state that gets snow, you understand why you need a shovel. You never know when you will need to dig your car out. I recommend buying a small collapsible shovel. The shovel that I have in my trunk is maybe 3 feet long and easily fits in my car without taking up much space, but the handle can extend to make the shovel easier to use!

#8 Supplies to Change a Tire

You should always carry supplies to change a tire whether you carry the rest of what is on this list or not. I have gotten a flat tire before, and I’m telling you it’s not fun. It can be even more stressful if you don’t know how to change a tire, or don’t have the tools to do so. Check out the DMV website or any reliable tire changing guide for the tools you need for your car.

These are the eight items that I recommend carrying in your car survival kit. If you’re wondering what else you should carry, think about what items you use on a regular basis, or what items you would want to have in an emergency and pack those!
